Newsletter - February 2026

Our meeting on Thursday February 12 at 10:30 will be in the Sanctuary at First Presbyterian.

We are very fortunate to have some outstanding brass players to perform for us.   Members of Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and some UNCW faculty members are as follows:

Stephen Luck - Principal Trumpet chair, WSO, endowed in memory of Dr. Peter Zack (husband of our former member, Gaile Zack)
Richard Hillson - Trumpet/Cornet, WSO; Wilmington Virtuosi Brass (WVB); and Wilmington Symphonic Winds. Recently from Nottingham, England
Kim Adams - Horn, WSO; UNCW Faculty Brass Quintet; WVB; and Long Bay Symphony
Joe Dowdy - Trombone, WSO
Dan Johnson - Tuba, WSO; UNCW Professor of Music and Music Education, Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy; Long Bay Symphony

We are blessed to have Beverly Andrews and her tireless efforts to reach students who deserve scholarships to continue their lifetime of musical endeavors. We had some fine contestants who played for us in January. Thank you to Liz Scanlon for including us with the auditions for the WSO competition. One of our winners also won the WSO competition. We have 3 finalists that won our scholarships that will be awarded at our May 14 luncheon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. They will perform the pieces that they auditioned with and will join us for lunch. Plan to be there!

A First!!! This year due to some effort from one of our members, we have a new scholarship/gift that we will be giving to a UNCW music student at our March 12 meeting. He is a senior piano major and is auditioning for graduate music schools. This meeting will also be in the sanctuary at 10:30. We were fortunate to have 3 donors who will sponsor his scholarship of $1000. The donors are Jan Halderson, Beverly Andrews, and Emilie Melcher. His name is Thomas Austria. I hope you will welcome him at our reception to follow.
🎻ALSO at the March 12 meeting: Kathy Meyers, Christina Maynard, Diane Stephens all of WSO, and John Tabler, piano, will perform for us. What a wonderful day! Hope to see you there.

Did you guess who is turning 100 this May? It is Martha Beery who joined TMMC in 1948.
And… another member turned 100 in Nov. 2025. She is a native Wilmingtonian who joined TMMC in 1976. DO YOU KNOW WHO SHE IS?
Can you believe we have 2 centenarians? Must be the music!🎶

With regards,
Elaine Gomperts,
TMMC President
